TPO works as a “photoinitiator” as it helps the polish harden quickly under UV light and makes colors last longer. Animal studies linked TPO to long-term fertility damage, which led the E.U. to ban it as a precaution while more research is done, as per the report by The Independent.
US still allows TPO in nail polishes
The U.S. has not banned or regulated TPO and has also ignored many other chemicals and additives that are already restricted in Europe. Nail salons in any 27 E.U. member states, other countries that follow E.U. trade bloc’s regulations like Norway and Switzerland, must now stop selling TPO gels and safely dispose of old stock.
Manufacturers in Europe are required to reformulate nail gels without TPO, which could affect supply chains worldwide, including the U.S. The ban could disrupt the American beauty industry, especially if products are sourced from Europe or if shortages happen.
Industry faces reformulation challenges
Some companies may reformulate their gels for both Europe and the U.S. instead of making two separate versions, and this might also pressure U.S. regulators to act, according to the report by The Independent.
Francesca Rapolla from the British trade association CPTA said industries sometimes win exemptions if they can prove risks are controlled, but in TPO’s case, they could not. She explained, industry couldn’t defend TPO use because they failed to show safe alternatives exist. Many in the nail industry are angry at the ban. Doug Schoon, a California-based consultant, said in an open letter that the ban is not backed by proper risk assessment, wastes safe products, and will hurt the economy. A Belgian wholesaler, ASAP Nails and Beauty Supply, launched a protest website saying the ban will cause “major economic damage” to small businesses and is based on “no human evidence of danger”, as stated in the report by The Independent.
