“Real-time technology is changing the labor market. Artificial intelligence is now the main reason companies are citing for job cuts,” said Andy Challenger, chief revenue officer at Challenger, Gray & Christmas, a company specializing in the rehiring of laid-off employees.

According to Challenger, Gray & Christmas, last month the tech sector announced plans to cut 38,242 jobs, the most since August 2024.

Since the beginning of the year, the industry has announced 123,653 layoffs, which is more than 65% more than in the same period in 2025.

These figures coincide with recent high-profile staff reduction plans in the artificial intelligence sector announced by companies such as Meta Platforms, Intuit, and Cisco Systems. However, the number of applications for unemployment benefits did not increase significantly, despite the many layoff announcements, which were mainly aimed at office workers.
