‘Why us?’ Tennessee stylists take domestic violence awareness training

Over the last six months, Miranda Gray was beaten, pushed into doors, threatened with one knife and cut with another in at least three separate documented incidents.
Now she’s dead, strangled on Aug. 18, Metro Nashville Police said in a statement.
Investigators arrested her boyfriend, 40-year-old Jared Streich, in connection with all those incidents and, now, her death.
Streich, a former attorney, called police to 46-year-old Gray’s Hermitage Park Drive apartment at about 9:30 a.m. reporting that she was unresponsive. When police arrived, it was obvious Gray was dead, according to their statement. An officer asked Streich how long she’d been unresponsive.
“He declined to answer,” police said in their statement.
A documented history of violence
While it was not immediately clear what happened to Gray, Streich was arrested on a violation of bond conditions related to a February aggravated assault charge. During that incident, Streich allegedly threatened Gray with a knife after taking $120 from her, according to court records. He was supposed to stay away from the apartment complex, according to his bond conditions.
An Aug. 19 autopsy made it clear Gray didn’t die of natural causes. She had numerous injuries and was strangled, police said.
Streich has been arrested at least four times before in connection to domestic violence.
In April, Gray reported that he “pushed her onto the ground” and “dragged her into their bedroom,” according to court records. He then pushed her head into a closet door and when she tried to leave, Streich closed the patio door on Gray’s arm, court records said.
Streich was charged with aggravated assault and violating bond conditions. The charges were dropped two days later, records show.
In July, Streich was again charged with aggravated assault and violating bond conditions when he reportedly cut Gray’s wrist with a knife, police said. Again, the charges were dropped two days later.
Streich was arrested a fourth time for violating bond conditions on Aug. 3 when police were called to the apartment for a domestic disturbance. His bond was set at $2,500 and he was released.
Each time police responded to Gray’s apartment, she was offered counseling, orders of protection, prosecution and shelter services, but she declined them all, police said in their statement.
Earlier this year, Streich had been working as an attorney in Rutherford County.
The Supreme Court of Tennessee suspended him from practicing law for six years on June 13. He was ordered to pay restitution to two former clients, and if reinstated, he will be placed on probation.
The case stemmed from two complaints, unrelated to criminal activity, filed against Streich with the Board of Professional Responsibility, records show.
In one case, he failed to communicate with his clients about the status of their case and failed to “act in a diligent manner and expedite the clients’ litigation,” documents show.
The complaints also said Streich failed to act competently, failed to return the client’s property, charged unreasonable fees and provided false information to the Board of Professional Responsibility.
