WASHOE COUNTY, Nev. (KOLO) – The Washoe County Sheriff’s Office issued a warning about a new cell phone scam, according to a Sunday, Aug. 24, Facebook post.
Scammers pose as customer service representatives and leave voicemails stating you’ve purchased a new iPhone. In order to have the charge reversed, the message tells you to immediately call them back.
Here’s how it works:
The call may be from an unfamiliar number, possibly displaying a company name on the caller ID.
The caller asks you to authorize payment for a new iPhone.
Then you’re given a chance to speak with a representative if you did not authorize a payment (which you didn’t).
This scam creates urgency, allowing scammers to trick you into calling them and handing over sensitive information to confirm or deny the purchase.
Legitimate companies will not make unsolicited calls, texts or emails concerning purchases.
To stay safe, check your bank account if you’ve received a voicemail like this.
If you suspect a scam or have fallen victim to one, report it to law enforcement or the Federal Trade Commission.
“Be alert and stay safe Washoe,” the post said.
