Pep Guardiola doubts Ederson’s Manchester City prospects after Galatasaray agreement

Ederson’s prospects at Manchester City remain under doubt as the Manchester City goalkeeper continues to be linked with a move away from the Etihad Stadium.

The 31-year-old did not travel for City’s Premier League opening win over Wolves last week, with James Trafford starting and keeping a clean sheet on his senior City debut following a return to the club after two seasons at Burnley.

Galatasaray are understood to have agreed personal terms to bring Ederson to Turkey, with the Brazil international entering the final 12 months of his current deal at the Etihad Stadium, with less than a fortnight to go in the transfer window.

Manchester City do not wish to sell Ederson and consider the six-time Premier League winner part of their plans for the 2025-26 campaign – but remain open to sanctioning a sale if their valuation is met.

Galatasaray submitted an official €10 million bid to Manchester City for Ederson last week, which is understood to have been swiftly turned down by Etihad Stadium officials, who are reportedly eyeing a fee in the region of €35 million for the goalkeeper.

Meanwhile, Manchester City have lined up Paris Saint-Germain’s Gianluigi Donnarumma as an ideal signing should Ederson secure his desired move to Galatasaray, who have also agreed a £15 million deal for Manuel Akanji.

Donnarumma has agreed personal terms to move to the Etihad Stadium but Manchester City will only progress their pursuit of the 26-year-old Italian should Ederson leave, having overhauled their goalkeeping department already this summer with the acquisitions of Trafford and Marcus Bettinelli.

Speaking to the press ahead of Manchester City’s Premier League meeting with Tottenham on Saturday, Guardiola was asked whether Ederson will start upon his return to match fitness after stomach problems ruled him out from last week’s victory over Wolves.

“No, we’ll see tomorrow,” said Guardiola. “We’ll see the side, he (Ederson) has had training these days good, and we’ll see.

“We’ll talk with Xabi (Mancisidor, Manchester City’s goalkeeping coach) and we’ll see, because in that moment everything is until – all the clubs I think it’s happened – after the Brighton game or after next weekend, the transfer window is over and after, ‘OK, now it’s done’.

“Now everything is, ‘What’s going to happen?’, and to be honest, I don’t know what’s happening with a few players. I don’t know who’s coming, who’s staying, or leaving. So I don’t know. I don’t know.

“With all the clubs, I had the feeling it happened the same. So we are not an exception because the agents make his roles and the clubs have his own opinions, the players have opinions and after that we’ll see what happens.”
