Ariana Grande has seven MTV VMA nominations this evening, and the singer leaned into her pop star persona to deliver a big fashion moment. Grande dressed up in a custom Fendi peplum dress with Swarovski accessories for the ceremony. Photographer Katia Temkin shot her look before she stepped out on the red carpet. Law Roach styled it:
She also posed with Roach on the red carpet.
Grande last attended the VMAs in 2020:
The star is one of the most nominated musicians tonight. “Brighter Days Ahead” is up for Video of the Year, Best Long Form Video, Best Pop Song, Best Direction, Best Cinematography, and Best Visual Effects. Grande also earned a nod in the Best Pop Artist category.
In February, Grande spoke to The Hollywood Reporter about how she plays a character as a musician, too. “At a certain point, you get tired of that [pop star] character, because it is a character,” she said. “There are pieces of you and your story that are woven throughout your songwriting, but then, because of the way it travels and becomes sensationalized, it gets away from you. And beneath all of it is just a girl from Boca [Raton, Florida] who loves art, and I think that’s why it’s been such a deeply healing gift to disappear into this character [Wicked’s Glinda]—to take off one mask and put on another.”
Earning the role and ultimately living in it taught Grande multitudes: “It became this beautiful evolution of getting to know myself beneath it all,” she said. “I was like, ‘Oh my goodness, I love this person underneath the drag.’”
