Homes were largely spared from Saturday’s storm after numerous down trees narrowly missed crashing through walls and roofs, while firefighters made quick work of a lightning-sparked fire in New York.
A cold front blasted into the tri-state by early afternoon, producing a series of storms that brought reports of moderate damage across the region. In its wake, wind and hail helped down countless tries in New Jersey as well.
A large tree came down in front of two homes in Glen Rock, New Jersey, just missing both residences during the height of the afternoon thunderstorms. Ring camera footage captured the tree come down across the front yards, even ringing the door bell of one of the homes.
In Yonkers, firefighters said a lightning struck a garage attached to the back of a home, causing a small fire. Fire crews were able to get a handle on the blaze before it could spread to the house.
“Seek shelter now! Watch for flying debris and downed trees and power lines,” NYC Emergency Management warned on X during the storms. A severe thunderstorm warning from the National Weather Service had warned of winds reaching up to 60 mph and quarter-sized hail.
Storms started firing around lunch time in the Hudson Valley and Catskills, but the most active window for severe weather was expected to happen between 2 p.m. and early evening, including in the Lower Hudson Valley, metro New York City, and northern and Central New Jersey.


Rain totals could exceed two inches in some areas, although most locations were expected to end up with less than that. Under the heaviest downpours, rainfall rates could reach up to two inches per hour.
Rain could linger overnight into Sunday morning, but should dry out before the start of the Jets game. Sunday afternoon will likely be the driest part of the day, and it will be markedly cooler than Saturday.
High pressure will move into the Northeast beginning Monday. That will bring clear skies, cool temperatures, and overall beautiful weather that should last most of next week.
