MAYFIELD, Ky. — The victim of a shooting that occurred Friday night near the Mayfield-Graves County football game is now reported to be in stable condition, according to Mayfield Police Chief Nathan Kent.
The shooting happened in a parking lot near War Memorial Stadium during the Battle of the Birds rivalry game. One adult victim was taken to Jackson Purchase Medical Center and later flown to a Nashville hospital for treatment.
Kent confirmed Saturday that the victim’s condition has improved. When asked whether the victim was in “fair” or “good” condition, the report was interpreted from the hospital as “positive.” Police have not yet identified a shooter and are continuing interviews as part of the investigation.
A portion of WYMC Radio’s livestream, shared on Facebook, captured the moment attendees began running from the stadium.
A separate post from sports broadcaster Eric Chumbler showed McCracken County and Paducah Tilghman athletes coming together to pray for everyone in Mayfield and Graves county after the incident.
The Mayfield Police Department said it was assisted by Kentucky State Police, the Graves County Sherriff’s Office, Mayfield EMS, and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms in responding to this incident.

MAYFIELD, Ky. — Counselors will be available Saturday for people impacted by a shooting at Friday night’s Battle of the Birds football game.
According to a post on the Mayfield Independent Schools Facebook page, counselors will be available at Mayfield High School between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. Saturday for students, staff, and any member of the community. Additionally, all Mayfield school activities are cancelled for the weekend.
Graves County High School Principal, Janet Throgmorton, also posted about counseling availability on the Graves County High School Facebook page Saturday morning.
“First, let me say how proud I am of the way everyone handled this situation. You did exactly what you should have—helping others and ensuring calm. Because of your actions, hundreds of people exited the stadium safely, and no one was injured. Thank you for taking care of one another,” the post read.
Throgmorton said the counselors will be available at Graves County High School Monday morning for all students and staff.
“While we are shaken, we will not live in fear. As a school and as a community, we will find the strength within us to overcome. Hug your children. Love one another. And please keep both GCHS and our friends at Mayfield in your prayers. Together, we will SOAR.”
